Introduction

In 2006, the Commission was given the statutory responsibility to regulate the activities of electrical contractors in the Republic of Ireland with respect to safety.  This means that while the Commission is involved in safety, the commercial practices of contractors are not under the Commission's remit.  In addition to regulating contractors, the Commission is also involved in the investigation of electricity related incidents which may occur from time to time.

Since 2006, the Commission has been developing a new regime to regulate contractors which includes appointing two bodies to regulate contractors on a day to day basis.

The Commission's overall objective in the regulation of contractors is:

"To protect the safety interests of customers with respect to electrical installation activities  through creating a suitable regulatory system which provides for electrical works to be carried out, tested and certified in compliance with the appropriate technical rules/standards".

Regulation of Electrical Contractors

The Commission has now appointed the Electrical Contractor Safety & Standards Association (ECSSA) and the Register of Electrical Contractors of Ireland (RECI) to regulate the day to day activities of electrical contractors.  These bodies will act on the Commission's behalf to register, inspect, audit and monitor electrical contractors.

The Commission has published criteria that ECSSA and RECI (as Electrical Safety Supervisory Bodies) and registered electrical contractors must adhere to, including conditions relating to safety standards to be achieved and maintained in electrical work and the procedures for the inspection and certification of work.

Both ECSSA and RECI will be subject to ongoing audit and inspection by the Commission to verify compliance with the Commission's criteria for regulation.

Consumers can expect a fully qualified and insured contractor when they choose a registered member of a designated body. For more information on the regulation of contractors please visit www.safeelectric.ie
